We all like to think that we are working toward something. For some people it can be toward a down payment, new car or college fund for future generations. But a conversation with my dad got me to think. What would we do if Ben and I were debt free? How would our lives change and what life experiences would we have because of this?  This is something that is new to my way of thinking. I can admit that I got caught up in the Dave Ramsey mindset that our household needed to be debt free and to throw all our available funds toward making that a reality.  I completely changed the way that we paid our bills and got excited every time we paid off another company, which is not a bad thing. But I never thought of the reason for doing this, other then I needed to do what another person told me to do. I never thought about the other part of the plan, to have real reason to become debt free!  One of the best things I learned came from the Make Shift Happen podcast by Dean Dwyer . If it doesn’t work for “you or your family” then it doesn’t work.  By listening to another person’s reasons I completely lost the truth behind the motto “become debt free” in the first place. So after talking with my father I started dreaming what would change in our life if this was a reality and not something that seems to be a far future. Below is a list of just the first things that popped into my head.
  1. We travel more. (Stonehenge, Ireland, Australia to see the Great Barrier Reef, China, ect)
  2. We would do more things (Vacations, new hobbies, more Carnival cruises)
  3. I would have grass. (This being Florida, no one has good grass unless its fake grass or they are spending a small fortune to have it maintained)
  4. I would have my Master Gardening License
  5. Our house would be completely renovated
  6. I would take cooking classes or higher a personal chef (so I could stop torturing Ben with my nightly creations of what I call dinner)
  7. I would hire someone to come and do a “deep” cleaning to the house on a monthly basis
  8. We would max out our retirement accounts
And that is just thinking about this for the first ten minutes. What would you do if you were debt free? How would your life change? What things are you doing in your life that is holding you back from your potential? Post comments below about your own personal dreams and ideas.  I would love to hear what your ideas on this are.
