Margaret Stevens

Background:
I have always liked the feeling that I have a LOT of options when it comes to my closet. I have even made it a point to make sure that my closet is full and most of the time to the point of bursting. In my world, you can NEVER have enough clothes! But then I started realizing that I don’t wear everything equally like I thought I did. Once I started realizing that almost half my closet was full of things that I thought I liked, but didn’t wear, I knew it was time for a change. It also didn’t hurt that I had found a really great second hand shop that was down the street to sell my used clothing and I got a good return on my unwanted items. That’s when I knew I needed to make a system to tell me what clothing I really wore, versus what I thought I wore in my head.
The Method:
Take all of your clothing and reverse the hangers so that they are facing the OPPOSITE way of how you would normally hang your clothing. Then, once you have used an article of clothing and are placing it back in the closet, just hang the item as you normally would.
Why it works:
This has been my go to method for a while now. The reason why it works is because it doesn’t make you feel that you need to wait for the beginning of the month, season or year to start the process. It can literally happen overnight and you can start seeing what to keep and what to sell with in a months’ time. It also doesn’t require you to change the way you store your clothing and remember a new method each time you do the laundry.
Recommendations:
Take into consideration clothing that is seasonal items and items that are rarely worn in the first place. You can either make them part of the process or put them aside for a later time and place to be dealt with. If you are still unsure about getting rid of an item that has not been used and passed over for a few months, take it and put it in a bag that is in the back of your closet and hard to get to. This will help you realize that you don’t really use the shirt and that you didn’t even remember you had it.  But make sure to take any items and sell or donate them every three months. Some people might like doing this monthly, but I would not recommend doing it any less then every four months. The point is to get rid of clothing that you don’t use, not just change the storing location!
