I have talked about it before and i will say it again. I love credit sesame. It has helped our household know what accounts we have open under our name and what our credit score is. This has come in handy in making sure that we don’t have miscellaneous accounts open under our name, extending our credit beyond what it actually is.  So when i found out that there was two Home Depot accounts under our name i was livid, especially since there should have only been one. Below, i outlined the steps i did to close incorrect accounts under our name.
  1. Get documentation: Get all your documentation ready first. This means getting any account numbers, names and phone numbers ready before calling. This will make it easier on you and the person you are dealing with on the phone to get everything straighten out.
  2. Call the company: Call the company and either request to set up payment plans or close the account. Remember, this is applying only to accounts that should not be open under your name (Collections, Old Medical Debt, Miscellaneous Credit Card accounts, ect)
  3. Send the document: Let the person you are dealing with know that you will be sending a follow up document that has your request in writing. This is another way to make sure that you CYA. This can also help depending on the company that you deal with. Its always better to have two forms of confirmation when closing an account then one.
  4. Check your account: Give the company 30 to 60 days to make sure your account gets updated. This is crucial to make sure that all your hard work pays off.  If you dont see any updated activity by that company with in 60 days, the start at Step 2 again. Most credit score blogs say to wait at least 90 days, but it is nice to make that no one has forgotten to update your account, you included!
